Does Copper Make Water Alkaline? The Honest Answer

Does Copper Make Water Alkaline? The Honest Answer

Short answer: not in any meaningful way. Water stored in a pure copper vessel picks up trace amounts of copper, but any change in its pH is small and depends mostly on the water you start with. If you want alkaline water, a copper bottle is not the tool for it. What copper vessels are genuinely good at is something else: research shows copper reduces common bacteria in stored water.

As copper makers, we'd rather tell you this plainly than repeat a claim that doesn't hold up.

What pH and alkaline water mean

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. Pure water is neutral at 7. Anything above 7 is alkaline (basic) and anything below 7 is acidic. Most tap water is already close to neutral, often between about 6.5 and 8.5, depending on where you live. Bottled "alkaline water" is usually around pH 8 to 9 and gets there from added minerals or electrolysis.

What actually happens to water in copper

When water sits in an uncoated copper vessel, a very small amount of copper dissolves into it as copper ions. This is the basis of the traditional Ayurvedic practice of tamra jal, water stored overnight in copper. Over time, the inside surface also forms a natural patina (tarnish).

Dissolving copper does not turn water into alkaline water. Any shift in pH is minor and depends on your water's mineral content, the storage time and temperature. Claims that copper vessels raise water to pH 8 or 9 are not supported by good evidence.

Does alkaline water have health benefits?

Alkaline water is marketed with many claims, but the evidence is limited. Your body tightly controls the pH of your blood regardless of what you drink, and stomach acid neutralises most of what you swallow. Some small studies have looked at alkaline water for things like acid reflux, but none support the broad health claims often made.

What copper vessels are genuinely good for

  • Keeping stored water fresh. Laboratory research found that storing water in copper reduced bacteria such as E. coli. This is copper's well-documented antimicrobial effect.
  • A centuries-old daily ritual. Filling a copper vessel at night and drinking from it in the morning is a simple habit that helps many people drink more water.
  • Replacing plastic. A well-made copper bottle lasts for decades.

How to use a copper vessel

  1. Fill it with plain drinking water in the evening.
  2. Drink it the next morning, after about 6 to 8 hours.
  3. Water only: no juice, lemon water, milk, tea or hot drinks.
  4. Clean it every week or two with lemon and salt. See how to clean a copper water bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Is copper water alkaline?

Not meaningfully. Its pH stays close to that of the water you put in.

Does copper purify water?

Copper reduces some bacteria in stored water, but it does not remove chemicals, heavy metals or all pathogens. Always start with safe drinking water.

Should I buy a copper bottle for alkaline water?

No. Buy one for the tradition, the antimicrobial effect on stored water and the craftsmanship, not to make alkaline water.
