Guide to Grades and Purity of Copper

1.   Pure Coppers

Pure copper refers to metal that contains at least 99.3% copper. This type of copper is extremely soft & very easy to mold, making it ideal for various applications. Pure copper grades are designated with codes ranging from C10100 to C13000. 

Key Examples of Pure Copper:

  • C10100 (Oxygen-Free Electronic Copper): This grade of copper is its purest form which contains a minimum copper content of 99.99%. It's highly valued for its exceptional electrical conductivity, making it a top choice for high-quality electronic components.
  • C10200 (Oxygen-Free Copper) With a minimum copper content of 99.95%, this grade is also extremely pure. It is preferred in applications requiring high conductivity and ductility.
  • C11000 (Electrolytic Tough Pitch Copper) Produced through electrolytic refining, this grade contains 99.95% copper, 0.03% oxygen, and less than 50 parts per million of metallic impurities. It boasts excellent electrical conductivity, measured at 100-101% on the International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS) scale. 

2.   Dilute Copper Alloys

Dilute copper alloys are pure copper that has been mixed with small amounts of other elements such as zinc, lead, nickel, or beryllium. These additions alter the properties of the copper, enhancing its performance for specific applications. 

Key Examples of Dilute Copper Alloys

  • C14700 (Free-Machining Copper): This alloy includes added sulfur, which significantly improves its machinability. It is ideal for manufacturing components that require precise machining.
  • C15100 (Zirconium Copper): This grade incorporates zirconium, which increases the alloy's strength and resistance to high temperatures. It is usually utilized in applications which require a high durability under thermal stress.
  • C19400 (High-Strength Modified Copper): With modifications to enhance strength, this alloy is suitable for applications requiring robust and resilient copper material. 

3.   Copper Scrap Grades

Copper scrap is categorized based on its purity and composition. These grades help determine the copper's suitability for various applications. 

Key Copper Scrap Grades

Bare Bright Copper is considered to be one of the highest grades of scrap copper. It consists of clean, usually uncoated, as well as unalloyed copper wire. It is the most valuable & sought after for recycling purposes. 

  • #1 Copper (ISRI code BARLEY): This grade includes clean, unalloyed copper wire, pipe, and bus bars. It is free from paint, coatings, or tarnish and is often used in high-quality recycling processes.
  • #2 Copper (ISRI code BIRCH): This grade consists of unalloyed copper that may have some impurities, such as coatings or oxidation. It is less pure than #1 Copper but still valuable for recycling.
